Earthquakes Displace Thousands in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Devastating quakes hit the country in February 2023

Over 630,000 people affected by the disaster

A series of devastating earthquakes struck the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 06 February 2023. The quakes, with magnitudes ranging from 5.6 to 6.3, caused widespread damage and displacement. According to a report published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on 14 February 2023, over 630,000 people were targeted by the disaster.

The report, titled "2023 Earthquakes Displacement Overview," provides a comprehensive overview of the displacement caused by the earthquakes. The data was collected through DTM's rapid needs assessments and displacement tracking activities. The report highlights the following key findings:

  • Over 630,000 people were displaced by the earthquakes, with the majority (88%) living in host communities.
  • The most affected areas were the provinces of Sud-Kivu, Maniema, and North Kivu.
  • The majority of the displaced population are women and children.
  • The displaced population is facing a range of needs, including shelter, food, water, and healthcare.

The IOM report calls for urgent humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of the displaced population. The organization is working closely with partners to provide essential services, including shelter, food, and healthcare. The report also recommends long-term solutions to address the root causes of displacement in the DRC.
